FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Message from ACSA President Rafael Plascencia and ACSA Executive Director Dr. Edgar Zazueta
We are troubled and deeply disappointed that the Trump Administration is rescinding guidelines protecting schools and other “sensitive areas” from Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids. This is an abuse of power and goes against the constitutional right of every child to have a public education.
Schools are meant to be safe spaces where children can learn and grow without fear. The mere threat of immigration enforcement in and around schools creates fear and anxiety, undermining the very foundations of our educational system. We know from past experience that this decision will result in some students not attending school, families disengaging, academics being disrupted, and severe impacts on social-emotional well-being. We are committed to continuing to work with our members and state officials to do what we can to protect undocumented and mixed-status families.
The administration’s actions will not prevent educators from providing a safe and healthy learning environment for students.
