FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RE: Executive Order on the United States Department of Education
The Executive Order to close the US Department of Education could result in a catastrophic impact on the country’s most vulnerable students and cutting much-needed funding will specifically impact students of color, students with disabilities and students in low-income communities.
This is about protecting students, especially those who need the most support. States will face challenges to create a system that measures up to the standards set by the USDOE, creating an environment of haves and have-nots.
Congress will make the ultimate decision on the closure of the USDOE. We will continue to monitor what happens in Washington, D.C. However, a stripped-down version of the department threatens important programs and won’t help students learn to read or how to add and subtract.
The Executive Order is putting adult interests ahead of student needs. This isn’t the time to be silent. This is the time to react and respond. ACSA is committed to working with our leaders to do what is best for students.
